Schlage FE595VCAM619ACC Camelot Keypad Entry Lever Door Lock, Satin Nickel

Reviews of Schlage FE595VCAM619ACC Camelot Keypad Entry Lever Door Lock, Satin Nickel

1.) Sturdy, well made, easy to install and use

I recently bought one of these for our home after we moved in. Now I don't need to fumble with keys every time I need to ket in the house, and I don't have to worry about kids losing or forgetting keys.

Like other schlage locks I have owned, this unit seems to be very well made, sturdy, and easy to install. The programming of codes is simple, and codes can be added or deleted just by using the keypad. Keypad use as far as entering codes or even updating codes is straighforward. The fact that a simple button push "lights up" the buttons at night is also cool.

The buttons are also epoxy-coated, so the numbers won't "wear off" thus revealing the codes used. I have a separate code for each family member, and can easily add codes if I have a contractor stopping by.

A key can be used to open the lock if for some reason the electronic part stops functioning (too cold from sub-sero weather, perhaps?). Since this is a Schlage lock, it can even be re-keyed so that the key you have matches the other Schlage locks your house may have.

2.) Great lock; Ya get what ya pay for!

I timed my installation of this at a surprizing 15 minutes, including removing the old doorknobs and reversing the handles on the keyless entry. Usually everything takes twice as long with me! The only hard part was deciding which door to put it on- the main house entry or an outbuilding I use a lot.

An earlier review stated that the lock shuts down for 5 minutes after four consecutive missed entries of combinations. I timed mine at 30 seconds shutdown, confirmed in the owner's manual.
The thing is made well, heavy duty even. Easy to program and delete combinations. I was hoping to gain entry a tad quicker by "swiping" a finger across four digits in a row, but this won't allow that; it wants a discret push of a number on the keypad with a very short time between entries. So it takes 3-4 seconds to open the door.
No complaints, but I await the day the 9V battery gives out and I have to remove the inside portion of this lock to replace it. Then I may have my first gripe!
P.S. - I paid $118 (on sale) for mine in bright brass at Lowe's, Jan.'09.

3.) VERY EASY TO INSTALL AND LOOKS GOOD

This item is very easy to install. I installed it in under 30 minutes and it looks and works exactly as described. I hate fumbling with the keys and this is exactly what I needed. Just enter the 4 digit code and presto the door opens. Great product. Buy it. I bought mine at Home depot for $139.99 + Tax....

4.) Solid Simplicity and Security
Reviewed by: Siskoray

What an amazing product. In comparison to the deadbolts that are being offered, this product is a definite no brainer with a slight exception of the price, which I have to declare is a bit hefty. However, what you receive in return is by far worth every dollar I paid.

To begin, I installed this lock in less than 30 minutes. I recommend highly that you read the instructions fully prior to installation since important details and descriptions are well explained and illustrated. If you are replacing a current lock, then you're more than likely to have a similar good experience installing this lock since the parts required to install are very similar in dimension to those that I replaced.

I also recommend the following tools when installing this lock:
1. A vicegrip with rubber grips.
2. Phillips Screwdriver
3. Flathead Screwdriver as needed to wedge materials

Once installed, creating, deleting, and revising your codes are a piece of cake. There is a master code of 6 digits and entry codes of 4 digits which can be given out to people you trust, or people you are giving temporary access to your home.

I also love the fact that the lock will stall for 5 minutes if the code is entered incorrectly 4 times in a row; a security which makes me feel safe and secure. And if that isn't enough, two sets of master keys if you happen to forget your code or the battery for some reason goes bad, which according to the product's key notes is something that won't happen for 3 years from the date of installment.

Finally when all is said and done, you have a smart looking lock that is very solid and secure. The satin finish is a nice touch, but most importantly this lock is tough.

No more keys. What's not to like?

5.) An excellent keypad lever
Reviewed by: Martin Santa Ana, CA United States
Rating:
This keypad door lever is a great replacement for a standard door lever, if you want to make access easier. Here's what I like about it:

1. This product is a door lever (i.e. a door knob, but without a knob) that you can lock and unlock without a key. Instead, you enter a 4 digit password to lock and unlock the door. Using a code to unlock the door is much faster and easier than fumbling for keys. Also, you'll never be locked out unless your forget your code.

2. If you have a knob or lever on your door, you can easily remove it and install this lever using a regular screwdriver.

3. You can set multiple codes (at least 5) to allow friends to access your home. You can easily delete the codes later when access is no longer required. Codes are set up using a 6 digit master password (which can be used to add and delete 4-digit access codes, but not to lock or unlock the door).

4. You can lock the door without the code. Just press turn the knob on the inside, and your door is locked. You will still need a valid code to unlock the door. This makes locking up when you leave very convenient. If you turn the knob on the inside the other way, your door is unlocked and you can come and go without entering the code.

5. This lock can be made "bump-proof." Bumping is a relatively new, and very easy way to pick most locks. It can be done in about 10 seconds and renders most current locks worthless as security devices. If you want to know more, search the internet for "bump key" and you'll be horrified at what you see. If you take this lever to your locksmith before installing it and tell him to disable the key mechanism, your door will be completely resistant to bumping (and keys). You can also easily disable the key mechanism yourself before installing the lever. I haven't used a key to get into my house since I've installed this.

6. The keypad is backlit, but only if you push the schlage key before you enter your code.

7. The unit uses a standard 9-volt battery. I've had mine for more than a year and haven't needed to replace it.

8. The one feature that I wish this unit had was time based entry rules. I'd love to create a password which only works during certain hours, so that a housekeeper could access the house on a certain day or at a certain time. Alas, nothing is perfect...

6.) Easy installation
Reviewed by: kato1770 Colorado, USA

I watched the installation video at the Schlage site. When the lock arrived, it tool me less than 30 minutes to remove the old lock, install the new one and program my user code. Very easy installation. The lock can be installed on left or right handed door. If you have a typical door with a lock, the only tool you would need is a screw driver. No new holes to drill. It even include the 9V battery. All metal parts, appears to be very solid construction.

8.) Classy looks, Easy to install and GREAT customer support from Schlage!

When I first installed the lockset it wasn't working properly. I called Schlage's customer support and was connected to a technician (John) who helped me figure out that it was missing a tiny spring. He plucked up a extra spring from his workbench and mailed it to me right away. I had the lockset up and running within 15 minutes of receiving the part! It works like a champ and looks great.
Mistakes happen, it could have been defective from manufacture, or it may have been lost when the seller's source opened the package...Either way, Schlage remedied the problem in no time at all. I don't mind a mistake when it's corrected so efficiently.

9.) The ONLY ONE you should buy!!!

I am a gadget guy. I own a lot of them. I bought my first lock of this type in 1995, It was made by quickset and had a single lit number on it that you adjusted by turning the door knob left and right until the correct number appeared in the window. it was well made and lasted until I moved. When I got to my new house in 2003, I went looking for the same lockset w/o any luck...they stopped making them. I ended up with a lockset that was much like this one (and more expensive @ the time). Unfortunately this one failed within a year (when it was below zero). I bought several more over the years with similar failures. When Schlage came out with this lock I was very excited, knowing their excellent repetition. I have had this lockset for 2 years w/o any problems (including on freezing days). The battery life has not been a problem (lasting a year in my busy household). I bought my daughter one and would recommend it w/o reservation.

10.) Great Convenience & security
Reviewed by: keysgirl Key Largo

I bought two of these and installed them myself with very little trouble (single woman not all that handy!). One of the doors was a brand new totally 'standard' door and the strikeplate that was included was not the right shape though I made it fit ok. I was just surprised that it did not fit out of the box. Not a big deal at all though. The hardest part was getting the right shape plate on it- you have to pry pretty hard and I worried I would damage it.
I was really excited about not needing to dig out my key when I get home (my car does not require a key either) and that aspect is as nice as I had hoped. But I also like that it is perfectly convenient to leave the door locked at all times so you don't have to worry whether you forgot to lock it after coming in from checking the mail for example. And you do not have to worry that you will lock yourself out either. I struggled with whether to get the keypad on the deadbolt or the handle and ended up with this one because it seemed like you might need 2 hands to open the door if you get the keypad on the deadbolt. Their website makes it sound like that is safer for an exterior door though... not sure why. I added a double cylender deadbolt too so suspect that is fine.
I love the look of the curved handle but one of my doors is hard to open (unrelated to the handle/locks) and the shape of the handle makes it harder to open and close compared to a knob. Hopefully I can fix that separate problem but if your doors are tight it might be something to consider.
The satin nickel finish is beautiful and is consistent with other satin nickel things in my home. This item is carried by Home Depot and Lowe's if you want to see it before buying...

I am never good in the mechancial side of anything. Anyhow, it was not hard to install - just took me abt 30 minutes. It was a miracle to me since I seldomly use any screws, bolts or nuts in my life.

This keyless lock is awesome! I don't have to carry anymore keys when I go out - swing the door till I hear the snap sound - Voila. In the past 20 years, I spent mucho, beaucoup de $$$ to find lock smiths to open my doors when I frequently lost my door keys.

Now when I walk my dogs, with 3 leashes in my hands and my furries friends are so excited to pull me out for the fresh air ~ it is never an easy task to lock the door. The problem is now solved w/this keyless lock! I just love this lock! It rocks!

This is easy to install and actually gave better quality than my old regular Schlage deadbolts. They work flawlessly. We haven't had them through the winter yet to see how they perform in the cold and snow but so far we are very pleased with the quality of finish and workmanship. I bought 2 more for all our doors.

I got the lock set as promised, opened the box and read the instructions. Very easy to understand. Changed out the lock in a matter of a few minutes. Idaho weather turned cold in a snap and the mechanism works just fine. It's nice to not have to fumble with keys in this weather while bringing in groceries when it's around zero degrees. I highly recommend this product for any sceptics out there!! Plus what's nice is if I have to leave for whatever reason for a while I can give a trusted neighbor a code so that they can take care of my dogs and not have to worry about lost keys.

I bought my first Schlage keyless lock a little over a year ago (for my one house) from Home Depot. It is super nice to leave the house and not have to worry about having your keys on you (my car key is not on with the rest of my keys). When I would go to the other house and have a handfull of stuff... I'd have to fudge around to find my keys. I'd always say to myself I should get another one of these keyless jobs... so one day I just did! Looked on Amazon and found that they were about the price as the home improvment stores (less the sales tax) so I bought my 2nd one here. I programmed the same codes from my 1st one into the 2nd one. Adding and deleting codes is so simple... a cave man could do it! Seriously though its the bee's knees. I would recommend the Schlage in a heartbeat.

16.) Very happy with this keypad entry lock/lever

I read the reviews and for the most part they were great. I wasn't going to spend quite this much, but I didn't want a $25 lock either. I'm very happy I made the choice to get this lock.

My son (14 years old) helped me install it - more like he held the tools for me because it was over within 20 minutes. Would have been quicker but I'm particular about the details so I move slowly. The only issue with installation that I had was getting the wires out of the way once I had the battery in place - but after a moment it became pretty logical how to place them. Programming it was a breeze, the instructions are very good for this. It took my son longer to decide what 4-digit code he wanted than it took me to program the entire thing otherwise.

The locks are very nice looking (I got the Satin Nickel finish) and look like they're going to last a long time. The lighted keypad is nice and bright, and shines in a pleasant blue color as well. I have a standard door with a standard doorknob set up in it and this fit perfectly. The replacement plates were even nice quality, very solid.

I've been using this for a month now and it's still working perfectly. When I have to replace the battery it seems like it should take maybe 10 minutes to do so - not bad whatsoever. I like that the inside handle works independently from the outside handle - so you can have it set up where it's locked from the outside but not from the inside (no more unlocking your door to leave your house, unless you're using a deadbolt or chain of course). Also I tested the key and it worked great too - may sound silly but it felt very solid and well made as well.

Being able to program several codes is great - I have one code specifically that I can hand out to friends or neighbors if ever there's a reason to have them go into my house when I'm not home. Then I can easily change it if I need to afterward, without changing my own code.

I would recommend this lock to anyone - it really is high quality and adds a neat little piece of technology to your life as well.

This lock was easy to install, easy to program & the kids found it easy to use. With a turn of the thumbknob the lock can be set to automatically lock or remain unlocked when the door is closed. I purchased two of these locks for indoor use about six months ago. I got them to replace some fingerprint locks that didn't work very well for my wife (BIOLOCK 333 SN-BK Biometric Fingerprint Entry Lever Door Lock with Remote Control, Satin Nickel with Black Accent). These locks, on the other hand, are sturdy, well built and work flawlessly (when the correct code is entered). The batteries have held up just fine and aren't showing any signs of needing replacing yet. However, to be fair to the other reviewers who have had trouble with battery life, we don't access these locks every day. There is a button on the top that will light up the keys. This can be handy in semi-dark conditions. What more can I say? Security without keys. My wife and I love these locks. They look great, too.

I purchased and installed the lock, it only took a half-hour at most. I got it working and love it. My ONLY concern is when I need to change the battery even though the directions state that the battery will last up to three years. The holding post that holds the key side of the lock (the entry side) doesn't seem to me to be very secure and I fear that the lock side will fall off when I take off the house side to change the battery. Of course, that is three years from now, but I think it is a valid concern since the lock is only held by friction of the post. I wish that Schlage had used a nut to secure the lock to the door instead of the mechanism is uses here. Other than that, I am very happy.

i have also used a MI touchpad lockset from smarthome which i really like. it feels pretty sturdy but i think the schlage feels a lot heftier. only problem i find with the schlage is the 4-digit code. i would much rather prefer at least a few more digits. while the smarthome lock may not feel as hefty it still feels pretty solid and you can have up to 8 digit codes. i have yet to test the lock on a battery fail. one reviewer said otherwise, but i hope it fails in locked mode.

22.) Update on Battery Life

The other reviews have covered the product very well, so I am just commenting on the battery life. My 9 volt battery that came with the lock lasted 1 month. I just assumed it had been sitting in the package and was near it's exp. date. The 2nd battery I installed was a fresh Everyready Alkaline 9 volt. It lasted a total of 4 months. There are only 3 family members in my house, so I don't think it is a matter of heavy use.
My point is that 4 months is a long way from the 3 years advertised so consider this when you are thinking of getting this lock.

4/5/09 Another update...3rd battery lasted less than 1 week and when it failed the door sat unlocked all day, not good. Will contact Schlage for replacement, but do not like to have to return things and pay shipping

23.) Really liked this until it stopped working

I had all the same positive reactions listed by others when I installed this. After I had been using it about six months, the 1-4 digits stopped working - when I pressed them nothing at all happened, though all the other buttons worked. This was intermittent for a while and then they quit altogether, taking me back to using a key. I called Schlage and was told that they recommend replacing the batteries every three months. Wonderful! Anyhow, I replaced the battery and guess what?! Now none of the buttons work at all! I have messed with the connections and all, but have been unable to revive it. So how do you send a lock in for repair? Just leave your door unprotected when you send it in? Anyhow, I misplaced my receipt, so I'm totally out of luck. I guess I'm just back to living with fishing out my key every time I need to get in.
